What is swamp dewberry?

Swamp Dewberry (Rubus hispidus) is a species of flowering plant in the genus Rubus and the rose family Rosaceae. It is a low-growing, trailing shrub that can reach up to 3 feet in height and has leaves with long hairs on the underside. The plant produces white or pink flowers in the spring which later develop into edible, sweet-tasting berries. Swamp Dewberry is native to wetlands and swamps in the eastern United States and can be found from Maine to Florida and west to Texas. It is an important source of food for wildlife such as birds and small mammals and is sometimes used for medicinal purposes.
